LUNSFORD, Suzanne Journee, passed away peacefully at home Monday morning, November 28, 2016. She was born on August 22, 1935, in Portsmouth, Va. In 1953, she left Portsmouth to attend the College of William and Mary, where she graduated in 1957. While attending W & M, she met her husband of 59 years, A. Lowe Lunsford III on a blind date. Their life together has taken them to many extraordinary places, beginning with an unexpected honeymoon in Schwabisch Gmund, Germany. From there they spent time in Virginia, South Africa, Texas, West Virginia and later, beginning in 1994, their retirement years back in Virginia.
She was a social worker by training and taught school while her husband was stationed in Germany with the U.S. Army. She was always involved in her children's school lives, activities and causes, and served in numerous clubs and organizations in all the places she lived. Among her various interests were bridge, book club, gardening and many civic organizations. She was always an active member of her church, no matter the town.
She was an Elder of Byrd Presbyterian Church in Goochland, Va., a member of the Goochland Republican Women, Book Club, and The Snooty Fox. In recent years she volunteered a great deal of time to the Goochland Free Clinic.
She is survived by her husband, A. Lowe Lunsford III; daughter, Elizabeth Lunsford Lanier; son, Matthew Lowe Lunsford; and daughter-in-law, Asia Stout Lunsford. Among her many passions were her five grandchildren, Paul Owen Lanier III, Carrington William Lanier, Ella Monroe Lanier, Taylor Leigh Conley and Camille Suzanne Lunsford.
A memorial service will be held at Woody Funeral Home located at 1771 North Parham Road, Richmond, Va., on December 1, at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Byrd Presbyterian Church.
